PCT Thruhike: Section 21

In this section,  we begin our hike of the “desert” section from Kennedy Meadows to Tehachapi. This episode features a new team up of a trail family with Snots, O Well, Gretzky, and Money Maker…as well as a shift in scenery.

Our videos feature quick and dirty views of each trail section as well as A+ and F moments and conclude with Lessons Learned. We hope you enjoy!

Friday, October 11:

  • Day: 116
  • Miles Hiked Today: 8.7
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1959.6
  • Miles Remaining: 693.5
  • Update: We enjoyed most of the day at Grumpys using the internet and eating way too much! AND…we sent home our bear canisters! We had a gentle 9 mile hike into the official desert/SoCal section.  One issue we have already identified are little briers that stick on our pants and shoes. We have to be careful they don’t pop our sleeping pad! Other than that, the desert is already fun! We have a trail family for the moment.  Oh Well and Snots are camping with us for at least the next week because, lol, they said it seems easier to find someone with a plan than to plan. Money Maker and Gretzky are also with us as well as Sauce Pack and Sound Effects.

Saturday, October 12:

  • Day: 117
  • Miles Hiked Today: 24.8
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1984.4
  • Miles Remaining: 668.7
  • Update: We definitely feel better at this lower altitude with generally easier terrain (though there was a rocky rough patch today), so 25 miles felt normal again. It is still cold though… which helps keep me moving in the morning but can be disheartening at breaks.  It also got super hot at one point. The desert is weird. We’re still hiking with our family: Snots, Oh Well, Money Maker, and Gretzky. They have started calling my planning the “Solar system” because of my trail name and that’s hilarious to us both.

Sunday, October 13:

  • Day: 118
  • Miles Hiked Today: 16.6
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 2001
  • Miles Remaining: 652.1
  • Update: 2000 miles!! And… we were convinced by our group to take an even shorter day than planned to hitch into town for the night after a fairly easy day of hiking with lovely views. We saw some AmeriCorps volunteers working on the trail and got some free cookies from some folks driving by us on the road.  It’s our last night with Money Maker because, as a NOBO flipper, he’s about done! It was fun to go off schedule a bit and get a really good shower for the first time in a while… and pizza. We’re back at it early tomorrow though!

Monday, October 14:

  • Day: 119
  • Miles Hiked Today: 23.6
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 2024.7
  • Miles Remaining: 628.5
  • Update:  We said goodbye to Money Maker (AKA Meatball) this morning sheet after a delicious breakfast in Ridgecrest. We caught a 7am bus back to the trail and began hiking by 8 from Walker’s Pass. The terrain was moderate and similar as our other desert walks… pretty with views.  The scenery kind of stays the same but it’s really pretty. We hiked into dusk tonight and the desert plants took on new light in the pink hues of the sunset. Our trail family is camped alongside an old dirt road in the desert mountains with views of sunset, moonrise, and hopefully a beautiful sunrise in the morning. We’re so thankful to the trail angels who leave water caches for us!

Tuesday, October 15:

  • Day: 120
  • Miles Hiked Today: 26.4
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 2051
  • Miles Remaining: 602.1
  • Update:  Just about 600 miles remaining! We got a layer later start today than I think we’d have liked and we took a couple of long breaks…we may be a bad influence on each other in our new tramily :).  However, the day was delightful and we got in only just after dark. The contrast of cold nights and hot days is still odd, but we’re coping. I’m a little concerned about a pain in one of my left metatarsals… I’ve heard of several people with microfractures in the area so I need to keep an eye on it.  Just one more long water carry tomorrow and the next day we’ll be in Tehachapi!

Wednesday, October 16:

  • Day: 121
  • Miles Hiked Today: 22.8
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 2073.9
  • Miles Remaining: 579.3
  • Update: Another chill day with the fam. We even had cloud cover today though the bugs were still bad in the trees and we finally met the infamous Poodle Dog Bush, a kind of western poison ivy.  My foot still hurts but not too bad. We’ve all taken to enjoying our breaks together as well which is fun. We go to town tomorrow! I’m excited about hot tub and new shoes!

Thursday, October 17:

  • Day: 122
  • Miles Hiked Today: 12.7
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 2086.6
  • Miles Remaining: 566.6
  • Update: It was WINDY today! I honestly thought I might go off the mountain a couple of times! However,  we arrived at HWY 58 safely and got a ride to Tehachapi with Ted the trail angel. I’m now clean and moisturized with cut nails. It’s a lovely feeling :).
