Mini-Blog:

Thursday, August 29:

  • Day: 72
  • Miles Hiked Today: 19.3
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1171.2
  • Update: We planned to leave by 7am from our hostel…but someone took until 9am to get ready…someone whose original last name rhymes with Bootart. But it was fine because we’d planned a short day to continue resting my leg.  The terrain today was a glorious soft well-graded pine-needled trail. The views were lacking and the poison oak ubiquitous but the easy terrain was a blessing for my leg, which does feel better! We did encounter pretty gnarly gnats, but I only ate a few and those are calories I didn’t hand to carry so… bonus! We also only passed one NOBO today… so they are definitely trickling out. If they’re still here,  they are hard pressed to get through Washington before the snows come. New friends met today: Bloody Mary, Daddio, Jim Jam, and Fliffy.

Friday, August 30:

  • Day: 73
  • Miles Hiked Today: 21.4
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1192.5
  • Update: We hiked another short day for two reasons.  1) I could really feel a difference in my leg healing after a day off and light hiking day and 2) We needed a spot with internet so Reuben could participate in his fantasy football drafts in the morning! The day was still a little challenging with few views and mostly uphill, but there was plenty of water and shade.  We even got to clean off in a big river! There were more terrible gnats and poison oak though…but my new shoes are breaking in and that’s good. We didn’t see any NOBOs today.

Saturday, August 31:

  • Day: 74
  • Miles Hiked Today: 20.1
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1212.8
  • Update: 1200 miles today! Despite seeming like a short hiking day, we actually didn’t start until noon after Reuben’s two Fantasy Football drafts. We had actually only planned about 17.5, but decided to hike until near dark (7:30pm) to put us in striking distance of Burney Falls State Park gift shop tomorrow (which will be closed on Monday and sells soft serve that I will mix with root beer). There is also good swimming there! The hiking today was also quite stunning as we walked along a ridge most of the day (so it was also a bit hot and exposed… with little water).

Sunday, September 1:

  • Day: 75
  • Miles Hiked Today: 21
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1234.7
  • Update: Today was a fun day… well except that the day started with a deer having stolen one of Reuben’s gaiters in thre night! My leg feels better…but my little right toe decided to get bruised today…weird. I’ll probably lose the nail…BUT the fun part was making it to the Burney Falls General Store before they closed for rootbeer floats! The state park was packed for the holiday weekend,  but we had our own little table of hiker trash enjoying our ice cream (Johnny Cakes, Breezy, UPAC, JC, and…SpacePad!). After our gluttony, we took a dip in the falls and headed for the next campsite, where we’re camped with UPAC, JC, and Money Maker. Tomorrow, we hike the notorious Hat Creek Rim…a dry exposed section we’ve been warned about!

Monday, September 2:

  • Day: 76
  • Miles Hiked Today: 24.9
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1259.6
  • Update: Our first larger day since I’ve been in recovery and my leg still really feels fine! My feet are still having difficulty with my new shoes (a half size larger than my last pair due to swelling… which helps some things but requires new callouses to form?) But today was really pretty despite being a notoriously difficult stretch due to lack of water,  lava rocks, and sun exposure… but it wasn’t too bad! I got to test out a new sun shirt I bought. I thought it would be too hot but it felt fine and kept me protected. We also reconvened with Zombie, who we haven’t seen since Ashland.

Tuesday, September 3:

  • Day: 77
  • Miles Hiked Today: 20.5
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1279.7
  • Update: Today we continued through the exposed rim towards our resupply at the Hat Creek Resort in Old Station.  There’d hike was pretty with views of both Lassen and Shasta all day, but hot and rocky. Many of our friends were hoofing it to JJs Cafe befor they closed at 3pm, but we were just eager to go 4 miles beyond to our glorious motel room for our first untimed shower in what feels like more than a month! Ahhhhhh hot flowing water…
