Mini-Blog:

Saturday, August 17:

  • Day: 60
  • Miles Hiked Today: 10.5
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 944.9
  • Update:  Today has been lovely.  First, we woke and enjoyed coffee and breakfast with Nick before he took us back to the trail for a nero hiking day. There were some fairly steep bits today as we climbed out of Ashland,  but we’ve got a lovely spot tonight with views of Shasta. I was also able to get some med supplies in town for my pulled groin muscle and early onset plantar fasciitis… which made walking today so much easier! Oh and bonus news! We got to weigh ourselves and I’ve lost 20 pounds and Reuben’s lost 25 pounds since we started. Whoah!

Sunday, August 18:

  • Day: 61
  • Miles Hiked Today: 24.9
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 969.9
  • Update: Today was a DOUBLE TRAIL MAGIC DAY!! First, someone had left two coolers full of soda about 1 mile into our day and then just before we crossed the border into California, a couple had set up a whole station of goodies! All this led to more breaking than usual, so our 25 mile day (shortish at this point for us) took longer than usual but we still made it to camp by 6:15pm. The terrain was mostly gentle today but with some steep parts.  My thigh and foot injuries require careful treading, particularly on downhill, but I think I’m coping well enough. On the bright side, I think the heel bursitis that plagued most of the trip thus far has subsided! Lord, I sound so old. Meanwhile, Reuben/Lunar is stoically uninjured. I comfort myself with the knowledge that I have to take 3 steps for each of his two… so I’m breaking faster?

Monday, August 19:

  • Day: 62
  • Miles Hiked Today: 25.7
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 995.6
  • Update: Today was kind of tough with a huge downhill into Seiad Valley with exposed rocky and brushy terrain… especially challenging for my injuries. It was hot and dry…but also beautiful and I’m glad the descent is over.  We’ve stopped just outside of town so we can eat breakfast at the cafe in the morning to fuel up for an even higher ascent tomorrow! We’ve also reunited with SpacePad, with whom we are camped and will eat breakfast tomorrow.

Tuesday, August 20:

  • Day: 63
  • Miles Hiked Today: 15.9
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1011.4
  • Update: We hit 1000 miles today! Unceremoniously,  it was in the middle of a road walk out of Seaid Valley…but still a major milestone.  We started the day super early to hit the Seaid Valley Cafe at 7 when they opened. We lingered over two hours, way too long,  but eventually left because the overrun of hikers stretched the Wifi too thin. I’ve been trying to solve a gear shipment dilemma. I need shoes, etc. but Amazon is being picky about where they’ll send items. Alas. After our swell breakfast, we had a hot 6.5 mile road walk and then a steady 5000 foot climb over, initially along a creek. We planned to hike about 26 today and get the climb,  but after a mixup about which swimming hole to stop at and mutual worrying the other was injured…we just called it a day at 16! Honestly, my groin injury needed a short day. We’ll make it up tomorrow and can finish the big climb fresh :).

Wednesday, August 21:

  • Day: 64
  • Miles Hiked Today: 26.6
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1038
  • Update: We got out relatively early for the big climb this morning and tackled it pretty handily with overcast skies easing the temps. Our scenery in the Marble Mountain Wilderness was spectacular,  even with the lack of sunshine. Then, the weather turned and we had to walk in a windy sideways rain on a ridge for the remainder… getting fairly soaked and freezing cold. It was still beautiful, but the wetness in combination with rocky steep terrain slowed us down considerably.  We stopped 1.5 miles short of our intended campsite when we found excellent water and protected camping during a dry moment (and it was also already 7:30pm and we were TIRED! Town day tomorrow! Looking forward to HOT showers, laundry, and breweries:)

Thursday, August 22:

  • Day: 65
  • Miles Hiked Today:215.5
  • Miles Hiked So Far: 1053.4
  • Update:  Another tough day with rocky shoe eating terrain… followed by a 1.5 hour hot, unshaded wait for a hitch into Etna…but… the views were beautiful and we’re currently clean and relaxing at a B&B (the hiker section was full,  so we splurged) drinking white wine on paper h waiting for laundry so we can ride bikes into town for dinner!
