Totally slept in today! In fact, we didn’t leave the hotel until noon! Instead, we decided to disregard the itinerary and just wing it a little.
So, we started by buying day passes for the Chao Phraya river taxis and headed north to see the Vimanmek Mansion, the world’s largest Golden Teakwood structure built by King Rama V. Reuben was wearing shorts, so we had to buy him a sarong to wear inside. The mansion was gorgeous, but no pictures allowed.
Next, we considered visiting some throne halls, but decided on the zoo instead, where we ate fried noodles (yes, even the Thai food at the zoo is AMAZING), rode paddle boats, fed fish, and gazed at animals.
Tired and hot, we took a tuk tuk back to the boat to head towards central pier to get sunset views from the Dome Sky Bar, made famous by the movie Hangover 2. Once again, Reuben was ill-dressed for the occasion since the bar requires men to wear long pants, so we rented some from this hilarious, but intrepid, woman on the street outside. Please see pictures of him changing in a police box (the woman’s cop husband’s post of duty).
After imbibing very expensive mojitos and taking pictures, we caught the last water taxi back with stunning night views of the river.
Next, we headed back to the hotel, stopping at what turned out to be a pretty fancy restaurant for delicious grub! The city is preparing itself for a giant party tomorrow (NYE)… As must we by going to sleep!
