Merry Christmas everyone! We started our day in Vietnam with a rooftop breakfast at our hotel and a trip to a local fish farm before being shuttled to a speed boat to Cambodia.

The boat ride was about 3 hours, but broken up by two stops: once in Vietnam to submit Visa paperwork and again in Cambodia to get stamps. We met a lovely family from Boston on the boat, so had ample entertainment.

Once in Phnom Penh, we took a tuk tuk from the dock to our hotel. Everywhere is decorated for Xmas here! The local people are almost all Buddhist, but they celebrate Christmas like we celebrate Valentine’s Day – the boys buy their girlfriends presents and little kids dress up like Santa.

Our hotel staff greeted us with “Happy Merry Christmas” and showed us to our desperately needed air conditioned rooms for a bit of a respite before eating a lunch of chicken amok and beef salad poolside at the rooftop bar.

After lunch, we toured the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda before returning to the hotel to meet a food tour guide.

We hopped in a tuk tuk and he took us around telling about Cambodian food, starting with the most extreme samplings: tarantulas, silk worms, crickets, snake, and duck fetus!! And yes, we tried them all!! (I ate two crickets… they were good!) After washing down our insects with beer, we headed for water buffalo and frog at another local haunt. We next went for seafood, but dessert caught our guide’s eye, so we stopped to sample six different fruit milk sweets. By the time we ordered mussels, squid, and shrimp, we were pretty full! Overall, a great food tour!

We said goodnight to our guide and are now quite ready for showers and rest to gear up for another long day tomorrow. Enjoy your presents and figgy pudding stateside!
