Madrid Itinerary (New Year’s Day):
11:00am Explore Jardines de Sabatini and Parque de Oreste
Today was New Year’s and most things were closed, so we spent the day ambling through the city’s numerous spacious parks.
First, we explored the Parque de Buen Retiro, enjoying the sounds of Pachobel and La Vie en Rose played by street accordions as we walked the well marked paths.
We next ventured over through old town, stopping for lunch and souvenir shopping along Calle de Alcala, on our way to explore the Jardines de Sabatini behind the royal palace only to discover the gates locked.
We then climbed up and around the Parque de Oreste to get to the Teleferico, a cable car that runs over the city, only to discover that Reuben left his Madrid Card at the flat. So his parents and I got some coffee while we waited for him to catch the subway back and retrieve his card to take the cable car.
The cable car deposits passengers into an oasis of peace and beauty called Casa de Campo. We wandered to and fro in this paradise waiting for 6:00pm to catch the sunset on our return trip back to the noisy city.
From there, we wandered towards the flat, investigating dinner options as we walked, ultimately stopping at a bar down the street from the flat for cervezas and tapas. Tomorrow we head to Toledo and we are very happy to see some new scenery!
